Subscription Overview Reports

This page describes the Overview tab of the Monetization dashboard. For an overview of monetization reports, see Monetization Reports.

Access the overview dashboard

To view the overview dashboard, follow these steps

  1. On the Developer Console dashboard, click the Reporting tab.
  2. In the left menu, expand the App Statistics section and choose Monetization.
  3. Select the Overview tab.

Overview dashboard

To view subscription insights for your app, use the available filters on the Overview tab. This tab has the following filters:

  • Showing Insights for - to select the app.
  • Subscription title (ASIN) - to select the subscription.
  • Choose subscription duration/term - use to select the subscription term

Each filter has an All option, which aggregates and shows metrics across all apps and subscriptions. After you use the filters to make your selections, KPI cards appear on the dashboard. The KPI cards display daily metrics and contain the most recent day that data is available for. The cards also indicate whether the KPIs have increased or decreased from the previous day.

The following table describes the KPIs.

KPI card Description
Total subscriptions revenue Total revenue generated on the specific day. This includes all amounts paid by users (excluding taxes).
Active subscriptions Number of subscriptions that were active at the end of the day. This includes users with free trials.
New subscriptions Number of subscriptions that started on the specific day. This includes users with free trials.
Reactivated subscriptions Number of subscriptions that were active at an earlier time period (prior to the specific day), canceled, and reactivated on the specific day.
Renewed subscriptions Number of subscriptions that were renewed on the day. This includes users with free trials.
Canceled subscriptions Number of subscriptions that were canceled on the specific day. This includes cancellations within a free trial.

Subscription performance

Use the What is my app's subscription performance? section to customize your KPIs and view trends for specific dimensions like marketplace and device type. This chart has two views, default view and customized view.

  • Default view: Shows all metrics. You can see stacked column charts for new subscriptions, renewed subscriptions, reactivated subscriptions, and canceled subscriptions. Stacked column charts aren't available for active subscriptions. You can view a line chart for Total subscriptions revenue. By default, data displays for All marketplaces, All device types, and for the time period of Last 30 days.

  • Customized view: This view is based on your selection in the Select metric filter. For example, if you select New subscriptions, you can view a column chart indicating the number of canceled subscriptions over time. You can also view a line chart that indicates the revenue inflow associated with these new subscriptions. For canceled subscriptions, you'll see a negative value for revenue, indicating outflow.

To customize the chart, follow these steps

  1. From the Select metric drop-down, select the metric of your choice. The available metrics are: Active subscriptions, All metrics, Canceled subscriptions, New subscriptions, Reactivated subscriptions, and Renewed subscriptions.
  2. Use the Time period filter to select the period you want to view the trends for. Options are Last 7 days, Last 30 days, Last 60 days, Last 90 days, and Last 180 days.
  3. You can also filter the chart data by device type and marketplace. The chart updates based on your selections. Device type options are: Select all, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Tablets, and Others. Others is a minor category that includes subscription purchases made on uncategorized device types, for example, purchases through the web.

The dashboard view for each user associated with your developer account is separate. A user's selections are seen only by that user and don't affect the dashboard view of other users.

Data tables

The Data Tables section also has a default view and a customized view. In the default view, the data table contains all metrics for your selected device type, marketplace, and time period. In the customized view, after you select a specific metric, you'll see two tables, one that displays your KPI by marketplace, and the other by device type. In both the views, each row in the table shows metrics for one day.

Download subscription overview reports

In the download center, you can download monthly subscription overview reports.

To download the reports, use the following steps

  1. On the Developer Console dashboard, click the Reporting tab.
  2. In the left menu, select Download Center.

Subscriptions overview FAQ

The following are frequently asked questions about the monetization Overview tab.

Reporting update for subscription metrics

Q: Why is Amazon updating the available subscription KPIs?
Amazon wants to provide KPIs that give you a holistic view of your app's subscriptions, help you measure your monetization performance, and identify growth areas. The new KPIs are designed to help you see data at a daily level and observe trends of your subscriptions' funnel performance. For example, number of new, renewed, and reactivated subscriptions are revenue metrics that indicate inflow, and number of cancellations is a revenue metric that indicates outflow.

The KPIs are available in daily trends for up to 180 days for every individual subscription (ASIN) and duration (such as, day, month, and year). They can also be aggregated and viewed across device type and marketplace dimensions.
Q: How do the current metrics compare with the previous ones?
The following table compares the previous and current metrics in the downloadable reports.
Previous metric Current metric
Active: The total number of active subscriptions at the end of the specified day (11:59 PM UTC). Active subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that were active at the end of the day. This includes users with free trials.
Started: The number of subscriptions initiated during the specified day. New subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that started on the specific day. This includes users with free trials.

Renewed subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that were renewed on the day. This includes users with free trials.

Reactivated subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that were active at an earlier time period (prior to the specific day), cancelled, and reactivated on the specific day.
Ended: The number of subscriptions that were canceled or ended without renewal during the specified day.
Refunded: The number of subscriptions that were refunded during the specified day.
Cancelled subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that were canceled on the specific day. This includes cancellations within a free trial.

The revenue metric associated with canceled subscriptions indicates the total refund amount issued alongside the canceled subscriptions.

In addition, the Cancellations report includes the following metrics:

Voluntary cancellations: Number of subscriptions that were canceled due to an explicit action by the user.

Involuntary cancellations: Number of subscriptions that were canceled due to no explicit action by the user.

The following table compares the previous and current metrics of charts and trends.

Previous metric
(Reporting Overview)
Current metric
(App Statistics - Subscriptions Overview)
Unique subscription purchases: The total number of paid subscription purchases (units) during the selected time period.

Units is a generic term that relates to the percentage increase or decrease of unique subscription purchases.
The equivalent of the Unique subscription purchases metric is the combination of New subscriptions + Renewed subscriptions + Reactivated subscriptions on a specific day.

These three metrics provide more details about subscription purchases than the previous metric.
Active subscribers: The total number of active subscriptions at the end of the specified day. Active subscriptions: Number of subscriptions that were active at the end of the day. This includes users with free trials.
Sales: Sum of Sales Price that indicates the total revenue of subscriptions for the specific time period. Total subscriptions revenue: Total revenue generated on the specific day in USD. This includes all amounts paid by users (excluding taxes).
Q: Is my old data going to change? Will my old data continue to be accessible?
You will not be able to access the old data in the near future. There will be a clean switch of the old reports to the new ones. Legacy subscription report CSV files in the Download Center and subscription-related charts in the Overview section of the Reporting page will soon be removed.

If you need help comparing the current metrics to the previous ones, see the table in the previous question, How do the current metrics compare with the previous ones? The Amazon Appstore recommends that you to start using the new reports and dashboards to get a more holistic view of your subscriptions' performance, and track your KPIs' daily trends to aid your business decision-making.
Q: Will the metrics change in any of the downloadable or programmatically accessible reports?
In the near future, you will no longer be able to access the old data on the downloadable CSV files. However, you will soon be able to use the Reporting API to access the new report.

Metrics

Q: What is the difference between reactivated and renewed subscriptions?
Renewed subscriptions is the number of subscriptions that were renewed by the user on the specific day. These subscriptions were already active, were due for renewal, and were renewed.

Reactivated subscriptions is the number of subscriptions that were active at an earlier time period, canceled later, and started again on the specific day by the user.

Renewed subscriptions were continuously active, whereas a reactivated subscription became inactive before being activated again.
Q: If a customer upgrades or downgrades their subscription, how is that reflected in the canceled subscriptions and reactivated subscriptions data?
Subscription analytics is available only at a plan view. This means it allows you to view the performance of each plan in the subscription. Currently, it doesn't show performance for the full lifetime of a user's subscription, regardless of the changes they make to their plan (such as changing from weekly to monthly). Therefore, canceled subscriptions don't have a specific indicator when the cause of the cancellation was a user upgrading or downgrading their plan. For example, if a user upgrades from a weekly plan to a monthly plan, it counts as a canceled subscription under the Weekly duration, and as a new subscription under the Monthly duration.

Similarly, if a user cancels their ongoing subscription (for example, weekly or monthly) and reactivates the same plan at a later point in time, this is counted as a reactivated subscription. However, if they cancel their weekly plan and enroll in a monthly plan, they aren't counted as a reactivated subscription.

To understand retention over time for subscription cohorts, which includes change of plan within a subscription, see the Retention dashboard.
Q: Why is the active subscriptions metric significantly higher than other metrics?
All the other metrics, New subscriptions, Renewed subscriptions, Reactivated subscriptions and Cancelled subscriptions are daily metrics whereas Active subscriptions is not a daily metric.

Active subscriptions indicates the number of subscriptions that are active as of the end of a given day. This includes subscriptions that were new, reactivated, or renewed at an earlier time, and are active at the end of a given day. By definition, Active subscriptions is significantly higher than the other metrics as it indicates your overall active subscriptions base.
Q: Can I aggregate number of subscriptions and revenue metrics over time?
Yes, you can aggregate the number of subscriptions and revenue metrics over time, except for Active subscriptions. Aggregating active subscriptions would lead to double counting. For example, if a particular subscription was active over two days, it would count as two subscriptions, when it was only one subscription.

You can sum up New subscriptions, Renewed subscriptions and Reactivated subscriptions while subtracting Cancelled subscriptions to find net new subscriptions over time.

Active subscriptions as of the end of a given day is the aggregate of all the daily metrics as defined in this formula.
active subscriptions today = active subscriptions from previous day + new subscriptions + reactivated subscriptions - canceled subscriptions.

Data availability (dashboard and reports)

Q: How often is the data refreshed?
The data in the dashboard and monthly downloadable reports (CSV files) refreshes every day with 24 hours of new data. The new data that becomes available is for transactions that occurred 48 to 72 hours prior. For example, on October 30, 24 hours of data starting from October 27 becomes available.
Q: The previous metrics were available after 24 hours. Why are the new metrics delayed?
Amazon strives to provide you with high quality reports and determined that refreshing reports at 48 hours, rather than 24 hours, gives you more complete information and better quality data.
Q: How many months of past data can I view?
At any point in time, no more than 12 reports (12 months of data) is available to download. The App statistics dashboard contains a Time period option of Last 180 days which can show up to the last 6 months of data.

Comparison with sales reports

Q: Do the revenue numbers match those on sales and earnings & payments reports?
Yes. The Total subscriptions revenue numbers match closely with numbers on the sales report and the earnings & payment report. However, you might observe minor differences as numbers on the financial reports (sales, earnings & payments) are reported in the marketplace currencies to account for foreign exchange rates during time of payment. Revenue numbers on the subscription analytics dashboards are displayed in USD.
